Signups begin for Boys and Girls Clubs volleyball and basketball

Boys and Girls Clubs of Petaluma is now accepting registration for kindergarten through third grade basketball and fourth through eighth grade volleyball.

Basketball leagues will be separated by grade (i.e. kindergarten league, first grade league, second grade league and third grade league). For volleyball, fourth and fifth graders will be combined in one league and sixth through eighth grade will participate in another league.

Registration is open until Friday, Sept. 21 for both sports, with practices beginning the week of October 15 and games starting the week of Nov. 12. Each team has approximately 10 practices and plays 10 games with the season ending in both sports on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Registration fee is $75 for basketball and $65 for volleyball. An annual registration of $10 for non-members also applies.

The foundation of Boys and Girls Clubs of Petaluma athletics is a focus on fun first, building skills in the sport and learning in a positive atmosphere where every child receives and equal opportunity to play.

In the kindergarten through third grade basketball league, kids are taught the basic skills of the game including dribbling, passing, man defense and shooting. This instructional league is a beginning to build the skills in the game, to develop new friendships and to enjoy the sport in a positive environment, where sportsmanship and teamwork are more important than wins and losses.

In volleyball, building the fundamental skills of the sport, including hitting, passing, setting and playing defense will be emphasized along with teamwork and sportsmanship.

Practice schedules are still to be determined; however, each team practices twice a week. Practices will be one weeknight and on Saturday.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a team or serving as either a head coach or an assistant coach should contact Boys and Girls Clubs of Petaluma at 769-5322.
