Chickens and pooping

Editor: As a chicken farmer, I was aghast to read that the Petaluma People Services Center was pressured into canceling its Chicken Plop Bingo event on Butter & Egg Days Parade day because a self-described animal advocate characterized the event as "exploitation" of animals that should be returned to their "natural habitat." Nothing could be more natural for chickens than walking around pooping. That's what they do most of the day.

The chicken (Gallus gallus) derives from Java. Does the advocate seriously want all the world's billions of birds returned to this Indonesian isle? I appreciate her care for animals. However, this misplaced concern dilutes attention that should be focused on real exploitation like cockfighting.

As a former PPSC board president, I know PPSC needs all the eggs it can gather in its basket. Petalumans, I implore you: please send PPSC your poop bingo wager as a donation. http://www.petaluma people.org/donate.shtml.

Let's not let this scrambled logic crack our community.
